Robert Reed - Artist Statement

Sublime...a few feet away from Leonardo da Vinci’s Madonna of the Rocks in London’s National Gallery...my eyes welled up while beholding the beauty of the angel in the painting. Sublime...inspiring emotion...that which words are not capable of describing...

One of my goals in photography is to capture a taste of the sublime.

  • A fawn gracefully arching its neck and back to observe a human.

  • A delicate mountain crocus with an inspiring Mt. Rundle background.

  • A seastar seemingly putting an arm around a neighbouring anemone.

  • Our Three Sisters in an unusually reflective pose.

  • Three generations of hands encircling their fourth generation baby.

An equally important goal is to capture and preserve memories. I combine photos and words as a method of journaling in order to safeguard and/or share experiences with others.

The digital world allows me to take many, many photographs. I frequently bracket my shots with several different light exposures. Much of my work is cropped and enhanced on the computer. I find that deleting the majority of my pictures leaves me with a concentration of better compositions.

A number of my photos have been made into greeting cards, frameable prints, as well as canvas and aluminum projects. These have often made meaningful gifts to family and friends.

I grew up in Athabasca and Edmonton. Most of my teaching career was in Red Deer. My wife, Lynne, and I have had a condo in Canmore for close to twelve years. We are grateful to be able to live in such a special valley with so many special people. Our mountains’ natural beauty and wildlife are world class.

My hobbies include grandfathering (a challenge as our three grandchildren are not nearby), hiking, cycling, downhill skiing, snowshoeing and pickleballing
