Bill Hunt- Artist Statement
I am a woodturner inspired by the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Before becoming a wood artist, I spent more than 30 years working as a Park Warden, Ecologist, and Natural Resources Conservation Manager in Banff National Park. My work in nature taught me to appreciate the beauty and unique character of the natural world.
I began woodturning in 1996 after finding an old lathe in a Calgary basement. After turning my first bowl, I discovered the joy of revealing the hidden beauty inside a piece of rough wood.
Over the years, I have developed my skills through years of practice and training with well-known woodturning artists, including Richard Raffan and Michael Hosaluk.
Today, the Rocky Mountains continue to inspire my work. I create unique, handmade pieces that highlight the natural beauty, texture, and character of wood. Each piece is one of a kind, allowing the wood itself to guide the final design.
